First natural hair expo ✔️
First time PRESENTING at a natural hair expo ✔️

So many boxes checked this past weekend at the Bella Kinks DFW Natural Hair Expo and I am still reeling from the experience.  When Julian (Ms. Bella Kinks herself) asked me a few months back to be a part of the expo I was in total disbelief.  Obviously, she saw something in me that I had not seen in myself, but now that's all changed :)  I don't think it really hit me until I was on my way home that I realized how powerful the weekend was!  And since my time in Grapevine was full of action, I wanted to give you all the play-by-play!

The rain as a result from Hurricane Patricia was trying to dampen the weekends activities but like Julian said at the opening event, "The rain is just a shower of God's blessings."  And indeed it was.  After an almost 8 hr drive in the rain, the weekend kicked off with the black excellence dinner at the NYLO Las Colinas. Everyone was dressed to the nines in their black tie attire donning the flyest masks.  The masquerade themed event was hosted by blogger Shine Struck and artist/songwriter Chris Classic.  We dined on chicken and snapper and enjoyed the signature martini for the evening, the kinky martini. Julian also did an informal recognition ceremony honoring a few of the people that have made an impact on her life.  Afterwards the DJ turned up the jams and we got to partake in a little ring light photo booth action.

Being that my VERY FIRST workshop was the next morning, hubs and I didn't hang out for too long because I wanted to make sure I was bright eyed and bushy tailed for the expo the following day.

Style Wars || Braid Out vs 3 Strand Twist Out

Think 3 strand twisting is the same as braiding?  Think again!  With 3 strand twisting you are wrapping an individual strand around the other two whereas with braiding you are intertwining the strands together.  I like both but I think 3 strand twists are my favorite.  Depending on the size of my twists, my hair is more defined and the twist out can last me at least 6 days without retwisting.

Wanna see the two styles go head-to-head?  Click below to watch the first installment of my new Style Wars series on YouTube!

Which one is your favorite?

Contemplating Deva

A cutting technique where the curls are cut in their dry, natural state one curl at a time.  Also known as the curl-by-curl method.

To DevaCut or not to DevaCut, that is the question.  I've been contemplating this cut for a minute.  I even attempted my own DIY cut earlier in the year, which I think worked out well.

Then in June after straightening my hair I went into the salon for a trim.  The stylist ended up reshaping my layers and I prayed that my freshly trimmed hair would translate into a cute curly cut but i was dead WRONG.  After a little bit of research I believe that she used a cutting technique on my hair called "notching" where she basically thinned out my ends.  I guess she didn't get the memo that big hair was in *_*  Now that my hair is curly again the shape is choppy and my ends are super thin.  Needless to say, I am NOT happy.

Fall Hair Routine

After a sweltering summer, autumn is finally upon us.  Falling leaves, cool air, and pumpkin-spiced everything becomes a way of life for the next few months.  Unfortunately in San Antonio, the high is still in the 90's on a daily basis and it feels more like an east coast summer than the actual autumnal changes I've grown to know (I'm a Virginia native).  It's typical for a naturalista to change their hair routine around this time to protect their strands from cooler, drier temps.  This usually consists of more protective styles, heavier oils, and thicker styling creams.  Since I don't have a real opportunity to enjoy this temperamental change, the majority of my routine stays the same except for a few switch- ups.  Here's the deal ...

.... And we're back

My hiatus from the blog was a bit longer than I anticipated.  You see, I've been trying to get my life in order.  That phrase is something I say on an almost daily basis, and you know what, I'm getting closer but still not there yet.  Kids, work, husband, and the all infinite checklist that comes along with looking for a new job in a new state and trying to find a new home for your family, is entirely too much to deal with.  Now add in a blog/vlog that also takes up a considerable amount of time (i'm a bit of a perfectionist) and you've got a burnt out woman.  To all the ladies that have been able to conquer that kind of life ... please spill the beans, inquiring minds want to know.  So anyway, this is another attempt to get back on this blogging horse.  And if you've been with me for a while, the blog got a facelift!  So here we are ... back at square one.  With a refreshed blog and a refreshed woman.  Cue in *Welcome back Kotter*
